Business Creativity In-A-Box
I was sitting down and really having a simple breakfast just near my home in Singapore and sipped a cup of coffee. Wow, the sensation of the warm coffee going down into my stomach was amazing - it was a cold, still morning - and then suddenly, a business idea popped into my head. How the heck do I keep doing that, I ask myself. It's strange, but as soon as I thought about it, I realized that there were a ton of affiliate programs already available that I hadn't tapped into. (Oh, if you are interested in affiliate marketing, just drop by my internet marketing blog.) The potential scale of the business was phenomenal. Coffee mugs. Coasters. Grinders. Machines. Makers. Beans. Flavors. I think you get the point. My point is this - business creativity comes from a simple process of knowing what is available, and what else could be. We've all done that simple process of writing down as many things we could do with, say, a pen. Yes, it's a brainstorming activity. No, don't kill someone with a pen. At the end of the day, creativity is not about ideas alone. Business creativity is about getting an idea that has a high level of marketability. Could I sell rugs? Sure. But why would anyone want to buy? See, it boils down to the "what's in it for me" mentality. We should have a large number of potential ideas to glean through, but we can't keep creating Tier-3 ideas. We need Tier-1 ideas that capture the imagination of people. I've figured we need 3 things to achieve this. First, we need knowledge. A massive amount. Once you have this, then you can work on taking the bits you know, it's benefits and so on, in order to recognize opportunities when they surface. Read about everything in your targeted industry! Second, we need a "plus one" attitude. Instead of shooting ideas down, how can we improve on them? That's the single most important element in creating a far more powerful idea. After all, if you use the analogy of a diamond, not all diamonds are shiny when found. But it'll be a mistake to just toss it into the furnace thinking it's coal! Improve, improve, improve! Finally, we need emotional management. Strange? Well, you can't be creative if you are in the wrong emotional state. I think you will agree that some emotions don't work as well for creativity. You need a calm, relaxed environment, even if it means sitting in the cold morning air sipping a cup of coffee. Ideas do jump at us. It's time to open your eyes to the possibilities! |
